As autumn arrives, the days get shorter, the evenings get darker, and eventually, the clocks “fall back” by an hour. While the time change may seem like a small adjustment to us, it can be noticeable for pets who are used to a predictable daily routine.

Here are a few simple ways to help your dog or cat adjust to the changing season while keeping them safe and comfortable.

1. Gradually Adjust Their Routine

Pets are creatures of habit. They often know exactly when it’s time for breakfast, a walk, dinner, or bedtime!

When the clocks change, their internal routine doesn’t automatically change with them. If your pet is particularly schedule-oriented, gradually shifting their routine by 10–15 minutes each day can make the transition easier.

This can include:

  • Breakfast and dinner times
  • Morning and evening walks
  • Bathroom breaks
  • Bedtime
  • Other regular daily activities

Keeping their routine as consistent as possible can help minimize disruption and make the time change easier for everyone.

2. Make Evening Walks Safer

One of the biggest changes in fall is how early it gets dark. Your evening walk that used to happen in daylight may suddenly take place in the dark!

Help keep your pet visible with:

  • Reflective collars, harnesses or vests
  • Reflective leashes
  • LED or light-up collars and clips
  • A flashlight or headlamp for yourself
  • Well-lit walking routes

Always keep your dog safely leashed near roads, driveways and intersections. Being visible to drivers, cyclists and other pedestrians is especially important during the darker months.

3. Keep Up With Exercise & Enrichment

Shorter days shouldn’t mean less activity! Regular exercise is important for your pet’s physical and mental health throughout the year.

If evening walks become more difficult because of darkness or weather, consider moving your longer walks to the morning or around lunchtime.

You can also keep your pet active indoors with:

  • Puzzle toys
  • Snuffle mats
  • Food-dispensing toys
  • Training sessions
  • Hide-and-seek
  • Indoor play

Even a few minutes of mental stimulation can help keep your pet happy and engaged when outdoor time is limited.

4. Don’t Forget Meal & Medication Schedules

The time change can be especially noticeable for pets who are accustomed to eating at the same time every day. A gradual adjustment to breakfast and dinner can help them settle into the new schedule.

For pets taking medications on a specific schedule, consistency is important. If your pet takes medication at a strict time each day, speak with us if you’re unsure how the time change may affect their dosing schedule.

And, of course, don’t be surprised if your pet starts reminding you that it’s dinner time according to their internal clock!

Enjoy the Season Together 🍂

With a little preparation, the transition into fall can be easy and enjoyable for both you and your pet. Keep their routine as consistent as possible, make evening adventures visible and safe, and find creative ways to keep them active as the days get shorter.

Most importantly, enjoy the crisp fall weather and extra time together with your four-legged family members!
